Jamaica weather will be favorable for vacationers most months of the year, but there are times when it makes sense to avoid this popular tropical island.
The island is famous for its people, culture and thick tropical vegetation, as well as its numerous all-inclusive resorts. Other draws include the capital city of Kingston and Dunn's River Falls, a 600-foot cascading waterfall that thousands of visitors climb every year.
It also is popular because it is easy to reach for most American tourists. Jamaica is only 600 miles south of Miami, FL, which makes it a quick flight compared to other Caribbean destinations.
Jamaica weather is warmer and wetter than the average Caribbean island. In a typical month, the average high temperature is about 89 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the World Meteorological Organization. The average low temperature is about 73 degrees.
Average daytime temperatures hit a high point of 90 degrees or more in June through August. In contrast, it averages about 87 degrees from December to March.
Total annual rainfall is about 32 inches, slightly below the norm for the region, while it rains an average of about eight days a month.
Rainfall is light from December through April. It picks up in May to about four inches, making that month less than ideal for a vacation. It declines in June and July and starts to increase again in August.
October has the highest amount of rainfall during the year at seven inches total, and the island typically has 14 rain days. The second worst month for rain is September and the third is May.
July is the most popular month for visits to Jamaica. Thanks to heavy rain, September and October are the least popular months.
People thinking about a Jamaica vacation will find that December through April, June and July are the best months to go. The months to stay away because of heavy rain are September, November, May and especially October.
