Cancun weather in September and October is likely to dump large amounts of rain on this hugely popular Mexican resort city on the Caribbean coast.

Those months are the peak activity of the hurricane season. Historical records from the World Weather Organization show that the city is spared heavy rains only when it is lucky.

It averages nine inches of rain each month and the highest number of rain days for the entire year -- 14 in September and 16 in October.

In contrast, total rainfall averages only about two inches in February, March, April and July, which makes those months more attractive times to visit Cancun.

The city's most popular months are December through March when northerners seek to escape snow and winter.

Temperatures reach a low point during the month and make seawater uncomfortable for swimming. The average highs in the winter hover in the low 80s Fahrenheit. The highs jump into the 90s during the summer.
