Curacao's weather makes the island a favorite for vacationers who want to go to the Caribbean during the region's annual hurricane season.
It's not that anyone wants to see a hurricane in Curacao. It's that the island is one of the few in the Caribbean that lies outside of the hurricane belt. That makes the Curacao weather forecast a good bet for most months of the year.
Curacao is one of the ABC islands -- Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. All three of these Dutch-influenced islands of the Netherlands Antilles lie south of the hurricane belt, just off the coast of Venezuela.
As a result, they see a higher number of vacationers than the rest of the Caribbean during the hurricane season, which official starts June 1 and ends November 30.
The most active storm and hurricane months for the Caribbean are September and October. Choosing when to go is an important consideration in any vacation plans.
Curacao receives an average of about 22 inches of rain during the year, which is one of the lowest levels in the Caribbean. Rainfall hits a low point of a half inch in March.
Unlike almost all other Caribbean destinations, Curacao has moderate rain in September, which is usually the worst rainfall month of the year. It increases to more than three inches in October and nearly four inches in November and December.
Heavy rainfall in December also makes Curacao unusual because December is usually the month when rain subsides for most destinations.
Temperatures are quite moderate with an average monthly high temperature of about 82 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Meteorological Service of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. It varies by only a few degrees each month.
The average monthly low temperature ranges from 76 degrees in January to 80 degrees in September.
The most popular months to visit Curacao are February through April and October through December, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.
But the highest level of rainfall for the island occurs in November and December, making those months less desirable than the spring months. The least popular months are May and June -- which have low levels of rain -- along with September.
Anyone thinking about when to go to Curacao will find that the risk of rainy weather is low for January through September, while the risk is high for October through December. However, October and November in particular do not see as much rain as other Caribbean destinations.
One final note: Curacao isn't entirely immune to the effects of the Caribbean hurricane season. A tropical cyclone (storm or hurricane) comes within 100 miles of Curacao about once every four years. However, it usually passes to the north of the island, so that any impact is indirect.
